A family jewelry store in downtown Rapid City

Neugebauer's has been a Rapid City jewelry store since 1945, and family-owned that entire time. We've been in the old Pennington County bank building on Main Street since 1996, which is long enough that we have sold wedding bands to people whose parents bought their engagement rings from us.

Six of us run the store. Four are owners. Between us there's a GIA and AGS certified gemologist, a custom designer working in CAD, a gemology student, and two bench jewelers who do our repair work. Almost everything happens under this roof: custom design, stone setting, sizing, restoration. We don't hand your ring to a stranger in another state.

Our customers are farmers and mechanics and teachers and doctors. Some come in for a $12 watch battery, some for a ring they'll wear the rest of their life, and we'd rather over-explain either one than let anyone feel out of their depth. Cleaning and inspection are free and honest, always, whether we made the piece or not.

From Sturgis to Rapid City

1945
Jerry Neugebauer opens Neugebauer's in Sturgis, South Dakota.
The Rushmore Mall years
Jerry opens a second store in the Rushmore Mall, and eventually closes the Sturgis location.
A change of hands
Jerry sells the business to Mike Gangler, who carries the Neugebauer's name forward.
1982
Richard Baumann and his father Dick buy the store from Gangler, keeping the name so many people in the Black Hills already knew and trusted. It has been in the Baumann family ever since.
1996
The store moves into the original Pennington County bank building in downtown Rapid City. It has been there ever since.
Today
The store is owned and run by Barbara and her children, Michael and Madeline, who both grew up in the business. Michael now designs custom pieces and works the bench, while Madeline manages the sales floor, works with custom orders, repairs, and appraisals, and is finishing her gemology degree. Her husband Matthew runs the repair shop with his brother John. Barbara, a GIA and AGS certified gemologist, continues to oversee the family business.

Madeline

Owner and sales manager specializing in custom orders, repairs, and appraisals. She’s continuing her gemology education while helping customers find, create, and care for pieces they’ll love for years to come.
