The Anatomy of an Anchor: Building a Permanent Jewelry Foundation
Custom Jewelry Design in Rapid City
Custom rings and jewelry, made downtown
Every custom piece we make starts the same way: someone walks into our shop downtown with an idea, a stone, or a ring they don't wear anymore. What we do from there is turn it into something that tells a story and lasts a lifetime.
Neugebauer's has been designing and building custom jewelry in Rapid City since 1945. The design happens here. The setting and the final polish happen here, at our bench, by our jewelers. Nothing gets shipped off to a factory and handed back to us.
Custom Designs We've Made
START FROM AN IDEA
A photo on your phone, a sketch on the back of a receipt, or a description you can't quite finish. We design your piece in CAD, so you'll see it in three dimensions long before we touch any gold.
REDESIGN SOMETHING YOU ALREADY OWN
The ring in the safe deposit box that nobody wears. Your grandmother's diamond. A piece that doesn't fit your life anymore. We'll take something that already means everything to you and make it wearable again.
MAKE IT MATCH
A wedding band contoured to the engagement ring you already have. A replacement for the earring that's gone. A piece rebuilt to look the way it did thirty years ago.
What our clients say
-
"They were never pushy, just helpful."
Brought in an heirloom family ring and they helped me turn it into a custom piece, long distance. Madeline and Mike sent digital images of every design idea and were endlessly patient. Now I have a ring I absolutely love.

"They preserved the sentimental value while giving the pieces new life."
We worked with Neugebauer's to transform a cherished family ring into two custom pieces. The team treated the original with care and listened closely throughout. The final rings are stunning and deeply meaningful.

"They stayed late to keep a promise."
Personal service and attention to detail are not a given anymore, so having a local jeweler provide both was a surprise. A special ring that symbolizes one of my passions, then a one of a kind custom brooch for our 25th anniversary. They've made every purchase feel unique.

FAQS
How much does a custom piece cost?
It depends on the metal, the stones, and how involved the design is, which is why we don't quote a piece until we've talked. What we can promise is that you'll have a real number before any design work begins, and there's no charge for that first conversation. If you're working with a budget, tell us at the start and we'll design to it rather than surprise you at the end.
How long does it take?
If you're working toward a date — an anniversary, a proposal, a wedding — tell us at the start and we'll build the schedule around it. Spring and Christmas are our busiest seasons, so more notice helps.
Do you actually make it here, or send it out?
We design your piece, and our jewelers build it. The only thing we send out is full watch repair, which goes to a watchmaker we trust.
Can you use a stone I already have?
Yes, and it's some of our favorite work. Bring the piece in, and we will look at it with Barb's help—she's a GIA graduate gemologist and AGS-certified gemologist—and tell you honestly what condition it's in and what we can do with it.
What if I don't like the design?
Your initial design is just the starting point. We’ll share the design with you for review, and we can make adjustments based on your feedback. Nothing moves forward until you’re happy with the final design and ready to approve it.
I don't really know what I want yet. Is it too early to come in?
No. That's exactly the appointment. Bring a photo, an old ring, or just an idea you can't quite describe. We'll ask questions and figure it out together. We'd rather over-explain something than have you feel unsure.
Do I need an appointment?
No, walk in whenever you're downtown. Making an appointment just means we've had time to pull some things for you before you get here.
Is there a deposit?
Yes. A $150 deposit is required to begin the custom design process. Your deposit includes up to two design revisions and is applied toward the final cost of your piece.
What happens after I pick it up?
Cleaning and inspection are free here, always, whether we made your piece or not. Bring it in whenever you're passing by and we'll check the settings and clean it up.
